About the artist

Mukisa

I am a Congolese (DRC) visual artist based in Melbourne, working in oil, acrylic and photography.

Born to immigrant parents and raised in Perth, I moved to Melbourne after high school carrying with me a deep curiosity about where I came from and what that meant. My paintings are portraits of people I know and communities I belong to, rendered in saturated, unapologetic colour.

Growing up in Australia, I became interested in the gap between how African communities are represented and how they actually live: with humour, style, tenderness and defiance. My work closes that gap.

I work from my studio in Melbourne and sell directly to collectors. Each painting is a signed, one-of-one original.
